| Description: |
The
Chinese major provides the training and cultural background
needed for entering East Asia-related careers in such fields
as higher education, the arts, business, government, international
relations, agriculture, or the media. Students may also consider
a double major in Chinese and another discipline, such as
business, international relations, economics, or journalism. |

Successful
completion of Chinese language through the elementary level
(CHIN 102/103) |

Requirements: |
36
credits: Language (18 credits): CHIN 201, 202, 203, 204, 301,
302; Civilization/History (6 credits) Option 1: HIST 284,
481 or 485, Option 2:-HIST 285, 480; Electives (12 credits,
300-400-level): 1 course in Chinese literature, 1 course in
Chinese linguistics, 2 courses in language, literature, linguistics,
or other East Asian subjects, all subject to the approval
of a departmental advisor. |

Students
are strongly urged to take additional courses in a discipline
relating to their particular field of interest, such as linguistics,
literary criticism, or comparative literature. Supporting
courses should be chosen after consultation with a departmental
