We’ve compiled a list of helpful resources that you can use to emphasize the importance of good writing in your courses, including a specific statement on the value of writing, ways to incorporate writing into your assignments, and ways to take the quality of writing into account in assigning grades. We also include a variety of other writing links to assist your students.
UMD Statement on Writing- Departments and faculty members are encouraged to include some version of the statement on public documents to reinforce the University's emphasis on the value of writing.
Assigning Writing- We include here a guide to developing assignment sheets that are clear and effective. We encourage you to send us, through our contact us link, examples of assignments that have resulted in well-written papers.

Assessing Writing- Teachers in other disciplines often ask for ways to evaluate their students’ writing. They want to know what to look for and what questions to raise. This collection of resources provides a variety of disciplinary rubric help.

Additional Resource Links- These links will carry you to a widely used resource for writers and teachers, the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL). It includes a variety of writing information for writers and teachers at all levels—grammar advice, style guides, English as a Second Language pointers , and links to reports on writing research. “Incorporating Writing into your Course” and the “Writing Across the Curriculum Clearinghouse” bring together solutions to the challenges you face as you move writing to a more central place in your courses.
