Babylon '13: Filming Conflict in Ukraine

College of Arts and Humanities | History Wednesday, October 29, 2014 4:00 pm Taliaferro Hall, 2110
Please join the Ukrainian film team, Babylon '13, to view and discuss their powerful documentaries about the current conflict in the Ukraine. The Babylon '13 team are convinced that their medium – documentary film making – can shape how people understand the world around them. The project began with the short video, “Prologue,” filmed at Mikhailovs’ka Square, Kyiv on Nov. 30, 2013.  "Prologue," like many of the Babylon ’13 productions, went viral on the internet, generating tens of thousands of views. Among the most famous movies are "The Heavenly Hundred," "Women of War," and "Avengers." Yurii Gruzinov, one of Babylon’s team members, will present (with Iryna Vushko as translator) 7 short films: "Differences In Donetsk" (Yuliya Gontaruk, Yuri Gruzinov)"Hand Gun""Cultural Checkpoint" (Dmytro Sukholytkyi-Sobchuk)"Revolutionary Fuel" (Yaroslav Pilunski)"Battle On Grushevskogo #4" (Ivan Sautkin)"The First Death" (Volodymyr Tykhyi, Yuri Gruzinov)"Heavenly Hundred" (Yuliya Gontaruk, Roman Lyubiy )  All of the films are in Ukrainian and/or Russian with English subtitles.  Discussion follows. Yurii Gruzinov left his native Russia to live in Ukraine as a young adult. A cinematographer by trade, he is a founding member of the Babylon ‘13 group.  On January 22, 2014 Yuri was shot three times while recording the Grushevs'kogo Street clashes. He continues nevertheless. On March 16, 2014, Yuri and his crew were captured while filming a documentary about the Crimean ‘referendum’ and were held by the separatists in Simferopol, Crimea for seven days. While held captive, they were beaten and tortured for refusing (in truth, not simply being able) to provide details on offices and leaders of the “Right Sector.”  For more on Babylon '13, see http://babylon13.com/en/                                                 https://www.youtube.com/user/babylon13ua                                              https://www.facebook.com/babylonfilms
