Clarvit Design Week features alumni guest designers, lectures, portfolio review session, and workshops open to all students.

The UMD Department of Art is proud to host the third annual Clarvit Design Week.

For those interested in applying to the Design Concentration, this is a great opportunity to hear about different areas of design, from interactive work to typography and letterpress to exhibit design to corporate design.


All events are free and open to all.

Monday, Feb. 27
11:30 a.m. Guest designer presentation by Kirsten O'Loughlin. Location ASY 2322

Kirsten is an interactive designer as well as a passionate letterpress artist. She will be presenting her professional work and discussing how she has made specific choices to say up to date with technology and the ever changing field of design. Lunch will be provided.


12:30 p.m. Kirsten O'Laughlin will participate in a critique of ARTT352 student work. Other students are welcome to attend.


Tuesday, Feb. 28
11:30 a.m. Guest designer presentation by Lynn Kawaratani. Location ASY 2322

Lynn has been designing exhibits for more than 15 years and is currently an exhibit designer for the Smithsonian. Her presentation, From Nuts to Bolts: The Creative Process of Designing Exhibits, will address how museum exhibits are developed and the role of the designer. This presentation will explore the complex process of creating an exhibit from an idea into a multi-sensory visitor experience. Lunch will be provided.


Wednesday, Feb. 29
11:30 a.m. Guest designer presentation by Lindsay Mannix, Jason Mannix, and Gavin Wade of Polygraph. Location ASY 2322

Polygraph is a young, multidisciplinary design studio in Washington, DC. They strive to do memorable and meaningful work for local brands; work that adds to the creative and cultural richness of the city. With diverse backgrounds in video production, industrial design, typography and graphic design, the team's approach is interdisciplinary and symbiotic. Lunch will be provided.


Thursday, March 1
9 a.m. John Foster (see more below) to participate in a critique of ARTT351 student work. Other students are welcome to attend. Location ASY 2322


11:30 a.m. Guest designer presentation by John Foster. Location ASY 2322
John Foster is a world-renowned designer, illustrator, author and speaker on design issues. His work has been published in numerous books and every major industry magazine, hangs in galleries across the globe and is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian. He is the proud recipient of a gold medal from the Art Directors Club as well as a Best of Show from the ADDYs and is a former President of ADCMW. His presentation is entitled “I Am Good At This: How designer John Foster found his posters in the Smithsonian, his books sold all around the world and his favorite bands staying at his house.”

4:30 p.m. Clarvit Week Keynote by Ken Carbone. Location ASY 2203

Ken Carbone is a designer, artist, musician, author and teacher. He is the Co-Founder and Chief Creative Director of the Carbone Smolan Agency, a design and branding company in New York City. For more than three decades, CSA has integrated content, strategy and art to create comprehensive 2D, 3D and digital design solutions for an impressive roster of brands. The agency's client list includes: W Hotels, Morgan Stanley, Canon, Carnegie Textiles, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Corbis Images, Architectural Record magazine and the Musée du Louvre. Their work has been recognized for design excellence and published internationally. Ken is a professor in the MFA program at the School of Visual Arts and frequently lectures on design and creative inspiration.


Friday, March 2
10 a.m.-2 p.m. Workshop with Ken Carbone. Location ASY 2322

Check out the event site for information about the design project Ken Carbone will be leading. All students are welcome to participate in the workshop, a great opportunity to work with such a renowned designer! Lunch will be provided.


Note that if you are interested in participating in the workshop, Ken will be giving a brief "warm up" after his keynote presentation Thursday. Stick around to get more information, and check out the event site to get a jump start on the project.


Saturday, March 3
11 a.m.-2 p.m. UMD AIGA student portfolio reviews in the UMD Riggs Alumni Center.


Sign Up Now! for the UMD AIGA student chapter portfolio reviews. The event will soon be open to design students on other campuses. Spots will fill quickly. Professional area designers will review your portfolios. This is a great opportunity to get valuable feedback on your work as you prepare your portfolio for the professional design world.


Note: you do not have to have a complete portfolio to present. Working portfolios are just fine.


There is a $15 per person charge for this event. This fee includes three 30-minute sessions with three designers of your choice!
