InDEFYnable: Stand Together, Struggle Together

Art | College of Arts and Humanities Tuesday, April 8, 2014 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm Hornbake Plaza

Throughout the Fall  2013 semester, the graphic design students met with and researched the different Asian Pacific American (APA) students on campus. Many APA students shared that they are proud of but not obsessed with their culture. They prefer to be regarded outside of their cultural stereotypes. The resulting campaign, entitled “InDEFYnable: Stand Together, Struggle Together,” aims to promote APA students’ coexisting cultural and individual identities. They are members of their cultural groups, but they also have other interests and activities as well.

The event will feature a large rotating pillar that displays portraits of six UMD APA students. Posters with information about these students as well as APA information will be installed in the plaza. Passersby will be invited to participate in a number of hands-on activities including contributing written and illustrative descriptions of themselves to add to the Hornbake installment. They can interact with the pillar and even Tweet a selfie with it for a chance to win an InDEFYnable prize. Collectively these activities and information will encourage the UMD community to view one another as individuals, not just as a stereotypical member of a culture or ethnicity.

The event is free and open to the public.
In case of inclement weather, the event date will be rescheduled to Noon-4 p.m., Thursday, April 10, 2014.
