Writers Here & Now: Catherine Barnett & Colm Tóibín
Catherine Barnett is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Writers Award, the Glasgow Prize for Emerging Writers, and a Pushcart. Her first book of poems, Into Perfect Spheres Such Holes Are Pierced, won the 2003 Beatrice Hawley Award and was published in the spring of 2004 by Alice James Books. Barnett's second poetry collection, The Game of Boxes, is forthcoming from Graywolf Press in August of 2012. She teaches at Barnard, The New School, and NYU, and she will be running the 2012 Emerging Poets Residency at Poets House.
Colm Tóibín is a multi-award-winning novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, journalist, critic, and, most recently, poet. He is the author of 34 books including The Heather Blazing, The Story of the Night, The Blackwater Lightship, The Master and Brooklyn. In 2006 he was appointed to the Arts Council in Ireland. His second collection of stories The Empty Family, published in 2010, was shortlisted for the Frank O’Connor Prize. He is currently Mellon Professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
