Fellowships

The university offers a number of outstanding fellowship packages for its top applicants, including the prestigious University-wide Flagship Fellowship, as well as named fellowships within individual departments. Deadlines for nominations fall in mid-January, thus students who would like to be considered for these fellowships are generally encouraged to submit their application materials by the end of December each year. Please note that applicants are strongly encouraged to check with individual departments, since some programs may have earlier deadlines for best consideration. Fellowship packages generally include tuition remission plus a stipend. Individual fellowship packages vary by department or field.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships offer students the opportunity to work closely with faculty, either as teaching assistants or as collaborators on research projects. Assistantships are intended to include professional development opportunities (for example, students may learn to design their own classes, may help to run lecture series, may become involved in the University’s Learning Outcomes Assessment process, etc.). While assistantship packages and duties vary by department, full-time assistantships include tuition remission, salary, and State of Maryland employee health insurance (insurance coverage is also available to family members and same-sex partners).
