Financial Support

Decisions on financial aid are made by individual degree programs and packages vary by department and/or field. Aid and Admission are granted on a competitive basis and may include fellowship or assistantship funding. Full funding typically includes tuition remission (up to 10 credits) and a stipend. Graduate Fellows and Assistants are elligible for State of Maryland employee health insurance (insurance coverage is also available to family members and same-sex partners). Aid packages do not cover mandatory university fees.

Fellowships

Graduate Fellows generally have no responsibilities other than their studies. Fellowship packages generally include tuition remission plus a stipend. Individual fellowship packages vary by department or field. For more on fellowship policies in The Graduate School please see: http://www.gradschool.umd.edu/prospective_students/general_fellowship.html.

In addition to a program's own financial aid and fellowship opportunities, the university offers a number of outstanding fellowship packages for its top applicants, including the prestigious University-wide Flagship Fellowship. Deadlines for nominations fall in mid-January, thus students who would like to be considered for these fellowships are generally encouraged to submit their application materials by the end of December each year. Please note that applicants are strongly encouraged to check with individual departments, since some programs may have earlier deadlines for best consideration.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships offer students the opportunity to work closely with faculty, either as teaching assistants or as collaborators on research projects. Assistantships are intended to include professional development opportunities (for example, students may learn to design their own classes, may help to run lecture series, may become involved in the University’s Learning Outcomes Assessment process, etc.). While assistantship packages and duties vary by department, full-time assistantships include tuition remission, salary, and State of Maryland employee health insurance (insurance coverage is also available to family members and same-sex partners). Fulltime assistantships are typically 20 hours per week. For more on assistantship policies in The Graduate School please see: http://www.gradschool.umd.edu/prospective_students/assistantships.html.
