Academic Planning

Orientation

The University of Maryland offers multiple orientation sessions, designed to familiarize students with everything from UM teaching policies to the libraries. Additionally each department typically administers its own start-of-year events. Please check with your department concerning their scheduled programs for the beginning of the semester. For information about TA Orientation, see the Center for Teaching Excellence Web site:

Advising

Each academic unit has developed its own advising system and you should contact your Director of Graduate Studies to learn more about your department’s process. In choosing a dissertation advisor, students are encouraged to select a faculty member whose field of expertise or methodology is similar to their own.

Thesis Process

Each academic unit has different benchmarks in the thesis or dissertation process, and students should be clear about their program’s expectations. Information about deadlines, committees, and university regulations for the thesis and dissertation process may be found at the Graduate School.
