The University of Maryland, College Park invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. A member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the flagship of the University System of Maryland, the University is located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor within nine miles of the nation’s capital. The University ranks among the top 20 public universities, with nationally-ranked programs and an innovative undergraduate curriculum.

The Dean is the chief academic officer and executive officer of the College and reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The College has a full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty of 322. These internationally respected and highly accomplished scholars are members of 14 academic departments, 5 living and learning programs, and a number of prestigious interdisciplinary research and outreach centers. The College employs more than 400 non-tenure-track research faculty and postdoctoral fellows, serving about 4,400 undergraduate students and over 1,100 master and doctoral students.  In addition, research awards for fiscal year 2010 exceeded $17M.

We seek a leader who, in collaboration with the College chairs and directors and by engaging faculty, staff, and students, will play a major role in fostering continuous improvement in the accomplishments, visibility, and international prestige of College faculty and students.  The Dean is expected to provide dynamic leadership toward excellence in teaching, scholarship, artistic expression, and service to the community and profession, and to enable successful strategic planning and fundraising.  The Dean must be able to lead a complex organization, and be committed to fostering goals of diversity and affirmative action to enhance the College’s mission.  The Dean must demonstrate an understanding of the value of the arts and the humanities and the capacity to foster an environment dedicated to the creation and dissemination of knowledge in the fields represented in the College.  The Dean must also possess the ability to anticipate and, together with other leaders, address future challenges and opportunities.  Qualified applicants must merit appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure in an ARHU unit, and have successful administrative experience. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The appointment date is open, with an appointment not earlier than July 1, 2011 preferred.
