REVIEW: The Art Gallery's Aligned: Paintings by Tobi Kahn exhibition is an unapologetic embrace of old-fashioned spirituality.

Painter Tobi Kahn is a rarity, not for his unapologetic embrace of old-fashioned abstraction but for his art's unapologetic embrace of old-fashioned spirituality. On Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., the University of Maryland Art Gallery will host a free reception for a new exhibition of the New York painter's serene, contemplative work.
 
The show will feature the largest installation to date of paintings from the artist's "Sky and Water" series. Arranged in a grid of 33 nearly identical pictures, the images in "Ynah" evoke the becalmed seascapes of photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, only with a lot more color.
