Antoine Borrut World Book Award

UMD History Professor Antoine Borrut wins the Islamic Republic of Iran's World Book Award for Between Memory and Power, his study of major Islamic caliphates in first and second-century Syria.

Professor Antoine Borrut has been awarded the Islamic Republic of Iran's World Book Award for his study, Entre mémoire et pouvoir: L'espace syrien sous les derniers Omeyyades et les premiers Abbassides [Between memory and power: the Syrian space under the Latter Umayyads and Early Abbasids (ca. 72-193/692-809)] (Leiden, 2011). The award's commendation cites Entre mémoire et pouvoir as one of the best new books in Islamic studies.  Professor Borrut will travel to Tehran early in February to accept the award.
