Reshuffling The Past: 2015 Contemporary Chinese Ink Art

Group exhibition explores new possibilities for a prized and age-old tradition.

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—From February 10-March 6, 2015, The Art Gallery at the University of Maryland (UMD) and the Confucius Institute of Maryland present Reshuffling the Past: 2015 Contemporary Chi-nese Ink Art, curated by Jin Weihong. This group instillation features the work of artists Huai Yi, Jin Wei-hong, Li Jin, Liu Qinghe, Qian Zhongping, Shen Qin, Wu Yi, and Yi Liao.

Chinese ink and wash painting is an elegant and expressive art form dating back more than a thousand years. While most collections of Chinese ink painting in major museums in Europe and the U.S. focus on its classic forms, this exhibition highlights modern and contemporary examples. The eight invited artists showcased here are currently the leading explorers of ink painting.

Established with support from Hanban, also known as the Office of Chinese Language Council Interna-tional, the Confucius Institute at Maryland promotes the understanding of China today through the study of Chinese language, culture, ethics and philosophy. Following its University of Maryland debut, the exhibition will next travel to the Roberson Museum and Science Center in Binghamton, N.Y., then to the Museum of Art + Design at Miami Dade College.

A public opening reception for Reshuffling the Past: 2015 Contemporary Chinese Ink Art will be held on Tuesday, February 10th, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at The Art Gallery, 2202 Art-Sociology Bldg., College Park, MD 20742. For more information, please call 301.405.2763 or e-mail theartgallery@umd.edu. Admission is FREE.

Students were not only invited to the public exhibition, but were invited to a student reception where Weihong discussed contemporary Chinese art and answered questions. Weihong touched on subjects ranging from the creativity of artists compared to the real world, and the introduction of Western culture into traditional Chinese art.
