Professor June Hargrove Received The Chevalier De L'ordre Des Arts Et Lettres And The Distinguished Teaching Of Art History Award Of The College Art Association.

The College Of Arts And Humanities Would Like To Congratulate Professor Of Art History June Hargrove On Receiving Two Signal Honors Recognizing Her Outstanding Commitment To And Excellence In Teaching And Nurturing Future Scholars.

The First, The Chevalier De L'ordre Des Arts Et Lettres Was Awarded To June Hargrove For Scholarship That Has Contributed To Knowledge About The Cultural Heritage Of France. It Further Recognizes Her Achievements In Education In Introducing So Many Students To French Art And Culture, While Training Graduate Students To Continue That Mission.

The Second, The Distinguished Teaching Of Art History Award Of The College Art Association, Recognizes An Individual Engaged In Teaching For Most Of Their Career Who Has Adhered To The Highest And Most Rigorous Standards And Has Achieved Outstanding Success In The Classroom, From Developing And Honing Future Generations Of Art Historians To Inspiring A Broader Cross-Section Of Students Across The Humanistic Disciplines.

From The Recent Announcement Of Professor Hargrove's Award At The Caa Conference: “june Hargrove, A Professor Of Nineteenth-Century Art In The Department Of Art And Archaeology At The University Of Maryland In College Park, Has Maintained Her Enthusiasm For Teaching And Scholarship Through Her Keen Ability To Nurture And Educate Generations Of Students. Striking A Careful Balance, She Has Found The Time To Create Innovative Courses That Embrace The Interests Of Students While Widening The Breadth Of Her Own Knowledge. Setting The Same High Standards Found In Her Own Research, Hargrove Has Developed Challenging Classes That Situate Art In An Interdisciplinary Context. She Has Been Able To Distill Large, Complex Ideas In All Her Courses, Expanding Further On Issues Of Race, Sexuality, Or Gender, Going Beyond What Textbooks Offer. Hargrove Gives Freely Of Her Own Time Beyond The Classroom So That Students Discover In Her A Compassionate And Thoughtful Mentor. She Helps Connect Younger Scholars To Established Art Historians And Museum Curators Beyond Their Own Immediate Environment. From All Of These Achievements, She Has Revealed A Fundamental Passion For Teaching, For Making Ideas Come Alive For Students, First At Cleveland State University And Then At The University Of Maryland.”
