Maryland might not be known as a mecca for fashion, but a new awards event is looking to make its mark by honoring the people who have made contributions to fashion in the state.
On Saturday, the first Fashion Awards MD will be held at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, and will recognize local designers, stylists, models and boutiques that are making a splash in Maryland’s fashion industry.
“I just think it is time that we had something like this. There are a lot of fashion shows and fashion events in the area, but there is nothing that celebrates people behind fashion,” says founder and producer Lana Rae.
Organizers received more than 10,000 nominations for the awards, which were narrowed down to five per category using input from a panel of judges, Rae says. The public was able to vote for their favorites in more than 25 categories using an online ballot, the results of which will be taken into consideration along with judges’ scores to determine the winner.
