Professor Richard Bell is the recipient of the 2017 University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award is the highest honor that the Board of Regents bestows to acknowledge exemplary faculty achievement in teaching. It is made only after a rigorous review process that involves faculty peers, administrators, and students.
Professor Bell is being recognized for his outstanding contribution in teaching and his passion for education and interactive instruction. In the many innovative courses he has designed while a faculty member at the University of Maryland, he has encouraged students to take ownership of their learning, and he is well known for incorporating student input into his classes so that he is constantly improving the classroom experience. Known for his enthusiasm and dedication he has already inspired a generation of Maryland students, even though he has been in College Park for a little more than a decade. Recognition as a USM Board of Regents awardees caps an already distinguished record of honors Bell has received for his teaching, including the University of Maryland’s prized Kirwan Award for Undergraduate Education.
The present honor is awarded annually by the University of Maryland Board of Regents on behalf of the University System. Appointed by the governor, the regents oversee the system's academic, administrative, and financial operations; formulate policy; and appoint the USM chancellor and the presidents of the system's 12 institutions.
