TDPS professor Heather S. Nathans elected President of ASTR.
The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) is pleased to announce that Professor Heather S. Nathans has been elected President of the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR). She will serve a three-year term through 2015.
ASTR is a U.S.-based professional organization that fosters scholarship on worldwide theatre and performance, both historical and contemporary. Beginning in November, Nathans will lead the association, which aspires to provide a forum for all theatre and performance scholars, and to attract colleagues from a broad range of disciplines. “I joined ASTR in 1994 during my first year of graduate school. To become president of an organization that has given me so much over the past eighteen years is an incredible honor and a wonderful opportunity,” Nathans said. The president-elect looks forward to the excitement and challenges that lie ahead in her tenure.
Nathans is also the editor for the award-winning series, Studies in Theatre History and Culture, with the University of Iowa Press. In 2011 she received a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship for her current book project, Hideous Characters and Beautiful Pagans: Performing Jewish Identity on the Antebellum American Stage.
