Latin American studies students discuss "The Memoirs of Speedy Gonzales" with local high school students.
Fifty 9th grade bilingual academy students from Northwestern High School participated in a series of activities at UMD culminating in a performance of "The Memoirs of Speedy Gonzales," produced by Latin American studies students and local artist Quique Aviles.
The performance imagined a biography of the controversial cartoon mouse in order to facilitate a dialog on race, ethnicity and steretypes.
After the performance, the UMD students conducted a Q&A session on Latino issues and stereotypes with the high school students.
