GALLERY: English Professor Peterson discusses her book "Black Gotham" at the Speaking of Books series.
English professor Carla Peterson describes her journey through archival materials searching for stories of 18th century African-American New Yorkers for her book, "Black Gotham" at McKeldin Library for the "Speaking of Books" series.
"Black Gotham" is Peterson's riveting account of her quest to reconstruct the lives of her ninteenth-century ancestors. As she shares their stories and those of their friends, neighbors, and business associates, she illuminates the greater history of African-American elites in New York City.
The series, "Speaking of Books", has been hosted by the University Libraries since 2005, allowing campus authors to engage with the campus community.
