SHERI PARKS CONTRIBUTES TO WYPR'S MIDDAY WITH DAN RODRICKS

Sheri Parks

By Midday with Dan Rodricks

Getting Baltimoreans, especially those in the poorest neighborhoods, to live healthier lives is one of the top challenges of public health officials. Prominent funeral director Erich March and his wife, Michele Speaks-March, are doing their part; disturbed by the premature deaths due to diabetes and hypertension they saw in East Baltimore, they established a grocery store in one of their community’s “food deserts.” But providing healthy food is one thing; breaking habits and deep cultural connections to certain foods is another. The Marches join Midday contributor Sheri Parks to talk about poverty and health, and the forces that tie us to the foods we’ve eaten all our lives.
