Two UMD professors, Ronit Eisenbach of Architecture and Sharon Mansur of Dance, explored the intersection of community and change in Silver Spring.

By Danielle Ohl, The Diamondback.

Red chairs placed on a median. Yellow ladders leaning on light posts. Four dancers climbed over the objects and imitated store genres; in front of an optics store, they held their hands to their faces and peered as if wearing glasses. Somehow, all of this had to do with place.

“Placeholders,” created by university professors and artists Ronit Eisenbach and Sharon Mansur, is an art installation that explores the meaning of place in the midst of transition, such as that of Silver Spring’s Long Branch community, which is preparing for the entrance of the Purple Line and the changes that will come with it.
