 William Donnie Scally.

William Donnie Scally, Ph.D. candidate in ethnomusicology, was awarded a fellowship by The Japan Foundation for dissertation research in Toyama City, Japan.

William Donnie Scally, a third-year Ph.D. student in ethnomusicology, received a fellowship providing full financial support from The Japan Foundation for dissertation research in Toyama City, Japan, for the 2019-20 academic year.

"Major fellowships like this one are increasingly competitive," said Scally. "Without this financial support, the research needed to inform my Ph.D. dissertation would simply not be possible."

Scally's dissertation project will examine the networks of musicians, teachers, club owners and others who are involved with the city's commercial music scene and traditional festival music.

"Through the lens of music, this study will provide a profile of the social life of a small city," said Scally.

After completing his fellowship in Japan, Scally will return to the University of Maryland School of Music in the fall of 2020 to complete his dissertation.
