The Gilder Lehrman Lecture Series
Sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Insititute, this history lecture series brings approximately 80 area high school students to the University of Maryland College Park campus several times a year. Students attend lectures delivered by University of Maryland History Department professors followed by discussion sections led by History Department graduate students.

THEATER
Playwrights of the Future
The Playwrights of the Future is a Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Community Engagement initiative pairing a team of Department of Theatre graduate students and senior undergraduates ( in the Department of Theatre) with Hyattsville Middle School's Creative and Performing Arts Program students to augment their curriculum by developing playwrighting and performance skills. The 15 week collaboration results in a final presentation of new work performed at the Center during Spring semester.
(introduce them to the basic tenets of Western theater and to encourage a greater understanding of the functions of theater in their own communities). Projects include playwriting, editing, and directing students’ plays.)

SHAKESPEARE
Shakespeare Camp

Shakespeare Camp is a day camp that trains students between the ages of 11 and 14 in dance, movement, improvisation, clowning, and stage combat over 10 days at the University of Maryland.

Shakespeare Monologue Competition for Middle School Students

National Orchestral Institute

One of the nation’s most respected training programs for young orchestral musicians. Currently in its 20th season, the National Orchestral Institute at the University of Maryland School of Music offers an intensive four-week experience in orchestral musicianship and professional development for musicians on the threshold of their careers.
Summer Percussion Workshop

This intensive 7-day workshop is available to percussion students age 15-24 (as of July 22, 2007). Daily events will include master classes and clinics presented by special guest artists. Students will have the opportunity to perform in these master classes and participate in the UM Summer Workshop Percussion Ensemble. Other classes will include: instrument repair and maintenance, mallet re-wrapping, orchestral percussion section repertoire, audition techniques (for college and orchestra auditions), two and four mallet technique, sight reading clinics, special internet conferencing with guest artists, and much more!
Students age 15-20 who reside out-of-town will live on the university campus and be supervised (if under 18 years of age) by resident assistants. Dormitory housing is not available to participants 21 years of age or older. However, a listing of area hotels will be provided.

Summer Youth Music Camp

A day camp for band, orchestra, and vocal musicians entering grades 6-9. Camp features instruction from University faculty and outstanding K-12 teachers. Students experience large ensemble rehearsals in band, orchestra or choir; small group lessons; participation in three elective music classes including jazz, composition, technology and more; performances by university faculty and professional musicians; and a culminating performance in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.

Art and Learning Center Summer Arts Camps

Four one-week day camps for children ages 6-12. All sessions include a general arts period (2- and 3-dimensional art such as paper mache, wood, painting, and more) and arts specialty periods such as puppetry, music, drama, and printmaking (please see our website for more information about the specialty camps).
