Student Advisory Board to the Dean

Mission:

  • To provide a forum for voicing student ideas and concerns about pertinent university issues
  • To provide the Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities input on College issues and concerns.
  • To provide representation at College and/or Department committees and functions, such as Open Houses, Maryland Day, etc.

Meetings:

The Board meets once a month (on the second Wednesday of the month, from 5-6pm) during the fall and spring semesters.

Membership:

The Student Advisory Board is comprised of one representative from each academic department. Board members serve one-year appointments, renewable to a maximum of a two-year term.

Students are nominated by their department and selected by the College of Arts and Humanities. Students who are interested in becoming Board members should contact the Undergraduate Program Director or Chair of their department. Be prepared to present the department chair or director your resume or a list of your campus involvement, as well as your contact information.

Benefits of Membership:

  • Be kept apprised of College, Departmental, University-wide issues that affect students;

  • The appointment would be considered an honor which a student can add to their resume and will receive some official notice of their participation;
  • Empowering students to voice their opinion and that of fellow students; and
  • Develop leadership skills.
Membership Criteria:
  • Good academic standing

  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Commitment to Department/College/Campus Community
  • Best representative of their Department
  • Represent the diverse student population
Officers:

Chair: Jeff Imwold

Responsibilities:

  • Preside over the meetings;

  • Set the agenda for the meetings--with the suggestions from the Board and the Dean;
  • In his/her absence, designate someone from the Board to preside over the meeting; and
  • Act as the official spokesperson for the Board at any College function.
Secretary: Christina Gleason

Responsibilities:

  • Take minutes at Board meetings;

  • Keep a written record of Board member attendance at meetings;
  • Notify either Associate Dean Gabriele Strauch or Dean James Harris of Board members who have missed too many meetings; and
  • Be in charge of the Board listserv, sending out minutes of the meetings, meeting reminders and handling questions and communication between Board members.
Webmaster: Jim Kelly

Responsibilities:

  • be responsible for working with the Board Advisor on the maintenance of the Student Advisory Board website and

  • On occasion, post a survey to poll students on specific University/College issues and concerns.
Advisor: Ms. Megan Forbes (Office of Student Affairs)

Responsibilities:

  • Organize the nomination and selection process of Board members;

  • Facilitate the initial meetings and ensure minutes are taken until Board officers are elected;
  • Function as liaison between the student members and the Dean and other College administrators;
  • Maintain the Board reflector, posting information on College and Student Affairs events; and
  • Train officers and work with them to ensure the proper functioning of the Board.
