Student Advisory Board to the Dean

Board Members:

American Studies -- Gabriela-Maureen O'Connor

Maureen is a senior American Studies major with a focus in Journalism and Sociology. She has devoted a lot of time to her sorority, Delta Gamma, as well as the Panhellenic Association and serves as the United Greek Council liaison on the Panhelleic Association Cabinet. On top of being active in the University of Maryland Greek community, Maureen is a member of College Republicans, and is a Health Center peer educator for Terp C.H.O.I.C.E.S. to spread awareness and truth about drugs and alcohol in the college environment. Maureen worked at the Washington Business Journal this past summer as the event coordinator intern, and is interested in advertising and event planning. Maureen is very excited to start her term on the Dean's Student Advisory Board and is looking forward to graduating in May.

Christina Gleason is a sophomore Theatre major. She performed in The Vagina Monologues her freshman year, and is currently the Art Director for the University of Maryland's radio station, WMUC 88.1FM. She spent the summer interning at the Annapolis law firm Hillman, Brown and Darrow. As the secretary for the Student Advisory Board, she looks forward to serving as a liason between the student community, Theatre department and the College of Arts and Humanities.

Dance -- Mary Beth Hanley

Mary Beth Hanley is a senior Creative and Performing Arts Scholar in the Department of Dance at the University of Maryland. While at UMD, she has performed on programs of Maryland Dance Ensemble, Choreographers' Showcase, the Millennium Stage of the Kennedy Center, and at the American College Dance Festival at George Mason. Mary Beth's own solo work "Pursuit" was presented on Anima: Music That Moves. She has been a teaching assistant for UNIV101: Introduction to the University (Fall 05), Modern Technique IV (Fall 05) and Fundamentals of Jazz (Fall 04). She has been an officer of the Student Dance Association since 2002 and is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. She is also a member of the Senior Council and was named by the College of Arts and Humanities as a Phillp Merrill Presidential Scholar. This is her second year serving on the Dean's Student Advisory Board.

English Language and Literature -- Catherine Zadoretzky

Catherine is a senior English major with a concentration in British literature. She has participated in the College Park Scholars in the Arts program and this past summer studied abroad in London. She is particularly interested in the interdisciplinary nature of literature, music, and visual art. This is her fourth year as a member and student assistant of the UM Chamber Singers. With this choir she has enjoyed opportunities to perform with the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center as well as myriad performances at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. She recently joined Femmes de Chanson (Women of Song), a student-led, a cappella ensemble. She is also very involved with UMD's chapter of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Board.

French Language and Literature -- Zahra Omar

Salut! My name is Zahra Omar; I'm the French department representative. I'm doing a dual degree in Physiology- Neurobiology and French literature. I teach Kiswahili as a part of the FOLA program and am also employed as an assistant in the Visual Resources Center in the Art History department. I am involved in various organizations on campus such as African Student Association, Beyond These Walls Arts and Reading program and the Pre-Dental Society. In addition to this I have participated in the language immersion program (French cluster) during the last two years. I hope to pursue a career in dentistry and to one day learn a fifth language.

Spanish Language and Literature -- Jeffrey Imwold

This will be Jeff's third and final year on the Dean's Advisory Board. Jeff has represented the Spanish Department now for three years, and last year served as the Advisory Board's chair. Jeff is a double major with Marketing and Spanish and is also taking French classes. He studied abroad in Costa Rica during the summer of 2004 and will be spending the winter of 2006 in France. Jeff is also the Resident Assistant in the Language House, where he is now spending his fourth year. Jeff is also a strong human rights advocate. He has participated in consortiums and activists groups for equality, and is currently interning at the International Labor Rights Fund.

Theatre -- Walter Destler

Walt Destler is a junior Theatre and Computer Science double major and is proud to be serving on the Student Advisory Board on behalf of the Department of Theatre. He is an active member in the Theatre department where he has acted or otherwise participated in several shows including Our Town, Eleemosynary, and Jane Eyre. He has also been a research assistant in the Department of Computer Science for the past year and a half. Walt's personal interests include writing computer games, acting, playing basketball, and reading science fiction.

Women's Studies -- Jennifer Joseph

Jennifer Joseph is a first-year senior double-degree student majoring in both Women's Studies and Government with a minor in Religious Studies. She has a strong interest in the relationship between religion and government, and in turn, how this relationship affects both women and issues of gender. Jennifer is a member of Phi Sigma Alpha, the Political Science Honor Society, the Golden Key International Honor Society, the Project on Culture, Religion and Globalization, and Students for Separation of Religion from State. Jennifer is pleased to be representing the Department of Women's Studies on the Student Advisory Board, and takes pride in using her voice to promote the interests of gender and diversity.
