Careers in Law, Business, and Medicine

Careers in law, medicine, and even business do not require any specific major. In fact, the marketable and transferable skills acquired by ARHU majors are highly valued in all of these career fields. Follow the links below for more information:

Recommended Courses

Law
At the University of Maryland, "Pre-Law" is a professional advising program administered through the Division of Letters and Sciences; it is not a major. ARHU majors are ideal for applying to law school. The College of Arts and Humanities provides a traditional liberal arts education while helping students develop skills that law schools want, skills in oral and written communication, critical and analytical thinking, and research.

Recent ARHU graduates are pursuing law degrees at such prestigious institutions as American University, Fordham University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, Howard University, New York University, Seton Hall University, University of California at Berkeley, and University of Maryland at Baltimore. For more information about the Law and Health Professions Advising Program, contact the Division of Letters and Sciences Law and Health Professions.

Medicine
While medical school applicants must have completed a set of required math and science courses, medical schools do not require a specific major. Students can major in arts and humanities and use their electives to satisfy medical school requirements, or students can pursue double a major. For example, Mona Siddiqui, the May 2000 Commencement speaker and University Medal recipient, earned a double major in philosophy and physiology/neurobiology and will enter The Johns Hopkins Medical School this fall. Students majoring in liberal arts generally score higher on the verbal portion of the MCAT. They also bring broad perspectives on societies, cultures, and peoples which are invaluable to the medical professions.

For students interested in applying to medical school, contact the Division of Letters and Sciences Law and Health Professions Advising Program for assistance in course selection, planning and recommendations.

Business

The communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills developed through arts and humanities majors are ideal for careers in business. They also have broad perspectives on societies, cultures, and peoples which are invaluable to employers and demanded from high level managers. It is also very important that ARHU students supplement their majors with internships and recommended coursework in business, communication, and information technology.
