NATIVE/HERITAGE PROFICIENCY EXEMPTION FROM THE ARHU FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

Students who have native/heritage proficiency in a language other than English can be exempted from the Arts and Humanities foreign language requirement if they can demonstrate oral proficiency in that language through an official telephone interview with a representative of the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Procedure

  • Students contact the ACTFL Testing Office to schedule a Diagnostic Oral Interview.

  • They should go to the following site to get an application for the test:

  • THIS FORM IS DESIGNED JUST FOR UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND STUDENTS IN THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES. PLEASE BE SURE TO USE THIS URL. The form will have “University of Maryland College of Arts and Humanities” printed near the top.

  • On the application students are asked to give several times when they would be available for the phone interview, starting 10 days from the day the students fill out and mail or fax the application.

  • ACTFL will communicate with students by e-mail to give them the particulars on the test date, etc., including passwords and other security measures.

  • The test consists of a phone conversation (approximately 30 minutes) with a certified speaker of the particular language.

  • Results should be available to the College of Arts and Humanities in about 10 business days. These results will indicate whether or not the student passed the interview.

  • The College of Arts and Humanities will contact students to let them know their test results.

  • Students who do not receive a passing score will need to satisfy the ARHU foreign language requirement by taking the appropriate course(s)in consultation with an ARHU advisor.

  • The current price of the test is $109.00.

NOTE: Please remember that you are subject to the University of Maryland Honor Pledge which prohibits you from receiving any unauthorized assistance with this interview.

•  Students' proficiency will need to be evaluated as Advanced-Mid, Advanced-High or Superior through ACTFL in order to satisfy the ARHU foreign language requirement.
