ARTstor
What is ARTstor?
ARTstor is a subscription-based digital library with over 700,000 images of artwork available for educational use.
ARTstor began as an initiative of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, along with the digital journal archive JSTOR. Both ARTstor and JSTOR are independent non-profit organizations dedicated to providing valuable educational resources, while also protecting the interests of content owners.
Access to ARTstor is free to students, faculty, and staff at the University of Maryland.
What does ARTstor do?
ARTstor provides a wealth of high-quality, downloadable images to use in the classroom and in presentations with the OIV, or Offline Image Viewer. The OIV is a downloadable browser which allows you to add text to images and present large images that can be zoomed in on or compared side-by-side with other images.
To register for an ARTstor account, you must register from an on-campus computer. Once you have registered, you may download the OIV and use ARTstor either on-campus or off-campus; however, off-campus users will only be granted an 120-day access period.
How do I use ARTstor?
ARTstor's library can be searched or browsed directly through the main website or by selecting the ARTstor database from the University Libraries' Research Port.
On-campus users do not need to register for basic image searching and viewing. (However, in order to perform higher-level functions such as saving image groups, all users will need to create an account.)
Off-campus users must log-in through Research Port or through the main website using their own login information.
