What is Facebook?
Facebook is a popular online social networking site that offers free accounts to all users. Most students are familiar with and/or routinely use Facebook.
What does Facebook do?
Facebook allows you to create a profile, which typically includes photos and other personal information such as educational background, interests, hobbies, relationship status, sexual preference, etc. You can search for other members’ profiles, send private messages to other users, or link your own profile to theirs by sending a friend request. Once you’ve become someone’s friend on Facebook, you can leave comments on their profile (a space called the “Wall”), view any photo albums that they’ve uploaded, and check out their friends.. You can upload an unlimited number of photos; however, you are limited to 60 photos per album. You can also adjust the privacy settings for each individual album, limiting the groups of users that can see an album, and tag other users in a photo. One of Facebook's more useful functions as both an educational and marketing tool is the Facebook Groups feature, which allows you to create a group space for your class or organization. You can send messages to members, create a discussion board, advertise events, share photos, and leave comments on the group Wall. Membership can either be limited to students you invite, or open to the public.
