What is Luna?

Luna is a digital asset management system which allows users to create and maintain an online repository of digital image collections. Luna is especially suited for supporting very large collections of images.

What does Luna do?

Luna provides a database for faculty to add, collect, search, manipulate and share images for lectures, presentations, or other educational purposes.

Luna is similar to ARTstor, as both systems can support rich, high-quality images that can be zoomed in on to focus on details or customized for use in presentations; however, Luna supports audio and video files and is more searchable than ARTstor. Luna's administrators can set up many levels of access to Luna collections, which can be made entirely public and published to the Web or locked down entirely for internal use. Public collections are available to the public for educational use on the Luna Commons website, and include such examples as the Pratt Institute Archives Photograph Collection, the David Rumsey Collection, and the Cornell University Collection of Political Americana.

To get started with building a collection in Luna, please contact luna-support@umd.edu. You can browse public University of Maryland collections by navigating to Maryland's Luna website. Log in with your UMD directory ID and password.

  • Browse and search for images on-campus or from other institutions (as featured on the Luna Commons website)
  • Tag images to improve future searches for the entire user base
  • Assign students images to view before or after class
  • Export images into Powerpoint presentations
