Streaming Media
What is Streaming Media?
Streaming Media is a process for serving up on-demand audio and video files on the Internet. The Office of Information Technology manages a streaming media server. OIT will help you put your audio and video files (mp4, wmv, hinted mov, audio mp3, and real media) and on the streaming media server. Afterward, they will help you embed links to the files on your webpage or in your ELMS course. Depending on your objective, OIT may charge you a fee. Instructional use of the server is free.
What does Streaming Media do?
You can use Streaming Media to broadcast presentations, lectures, performances, and other events over the Internet. People who want to listen to a song or watch a movie get impatient when they have to wait five or ten minutes for the file to download completely. Streaming Media gives them instant gratification, because when they click on the media, it starts to play automatically.
Streaming Media is especially useful for very large audio and video files; however, if you want your users to have permanent copies of the audio and video files on their own computers, then streaming media is not the best transmission process to use. Instead, you should use a progressive download process. OIT can help you decide which process is best suited to your goals.
How can Streaming Media help me?
- Broadcast lectures live
- Archive lectures to view later
- Watch performances online
- Listen to guest lecturers from around the world
- Broadcast your course to students off-campus (Distance Learning)
