Connecting to ACS from Off Campus

The simplest method for connecting to ACS from off campus is to connect using your web browser. This method should work for everyone, no matter what kind of computer or what operating system you are using.

Connecting using a web browser only allows you to upload or download one file at a time. If you want to transfer multiple files or entire folders at one time, you can connect using an FTP client such as Fetch or WSFTP.

If you have a Macintosh and are using Mac OS 8.5 or higher and wish to connect via native file access, visit www.arhu.umd.edu/technology/acs/documentation/macremote.html for alternate connection instructions.

If you connect to the Internet using a commerical internet service provider you must use the Campus VPN client or your connection attempt will be refused by the College server. This is because for security reasons the server does not accept FTP connections from anywhere other than the umd.edu domain. For information on using the VPN client or to download a copy of the client, visit the OIT User Services Help Desk pages found at www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/applications/vpn/. If you connect by modem using the Campus dialup pools you do not need to use the VPN client to connect to ACS.
