To connect to the server via FTP using an FTP client follow these steps:

  1. The server name for the connection is acs.umd.edu.
  2. Your username is: .username.dept.arhu.umcp (“username” should be replaced with your username on the server – don’t forget the preceding “.”. “dept” should be replaced with the abbreviation for your department. See www.arhu.umd.edu/technology/acs/documentation/context.html to find your department’s abbreviation).
  3. Enter your password when prompted.
  4. Your FTP client will open a window showing the files in your home directory. You can upload and download files as you normally do when using FTP.


To connect to the server via FTP using a web browser follow these steps:

  1. In the location (Netscape) or Address (Internet Explorer) box at the top of your web browser type: ftp://.username.dept.arhu.umcp@acs.umd.edu, where "username" is replaced by your username on the server and "dept" is replaced with the abbreviation for your department. See www.arhu.umd.edu/technology/acs/documentation/context.html to find your department's abbreviation. Do not forget the preceding "."
  2. When prompted, enter your password
  3. Your web browser will open a window showing links to the files and folders in your home directory on the server. Click on a file to download it to your local machine. To upload a file, drag it from your local machine into the browser window.
