Information Technology Funding Policies

The College has three funding programs for the support of technology: Faculty workstation matching funds, administrative workstation matching funds, and instructional technology funds.

Workstation Deployment: Faculty Workstation Matching Funds

Faculty workstations are computers in faculty offices needed by faculty members to support research, instruction, and administrative work. Faculty workstation funds may be used to purchase administrative machines only if the equipment being replaced is not on the obsolete technology list and is moved to a tenure-track faculty member's campus office. Faculty workstation funding support is available only to academic units (units with tenured faculty lines) and is only available to support the purchase of equipment for full-time tenured or tenure track faculty. Requests for laptop equipment or for desktop configurations that are more costly than the standard configuration provided will require justification from the Chair. If approved, the College will provide a one-to-one match of funds used for the purchase of faculty workstations up to a maximum of $1,500 of College money per machine. Departments may purchase faculty workstations that cost more than $3,000 but the College contribution will not exceed $1,500 per machine. The College will not provide matching funds for more than one computer per faculty member. The College does not provide matching funds for software or printers for individual faculty members. Requests for network printers will be considered. Unit heads are invited to submit workstation requests each spring, for purchase of equipment for the following academic year.

Administrative Workstation Matching Funds

Administrative workstations are computers in administrative offices that are used by staff members. For approved requests, the College will provide a one-to-one match of funds up to a maximum of $1,000 of College money per machine. Departments may purchase administrative workstations that cost more than $2,000, but the College contribution will not exceed $1,000 per machine. The College will not provide matching funds for more than one computer per staff member. The College does not provide matching funds for software. Available funds for administrative machines are extremely limited. Please consider your requests carefully. The College may request additional justification for requests for administrative matching funds on a case-by-case basis. Unit heads are invited to submit workstation requests each spring, for purchase of equipment for the following academic year.

Workstation Deployment: Instructional Technology Funding

Instructional technology funding is provided to support the use of technology by students and in instruction. Departments are not required to provide matching funds in order to receive instructional technology support. Instructional technology funds only may be used to support instruction, the development of instructional materials, and the use of technology by graduate and undergraduate students. Instructional technology funds may not be used to purchase or upgrade faculty workstations or for software for installation on faculty machines. Instructional Technology funds may not be used for furnishings or renovations. Unit heads are invited to submit workstation requests each spring, for purchase of equipment for the following academic year.

Quesions about information technology policies should be directed to Kathleen Cavanaugh, Assistant Dean, Academic Technology & Admin Ops (kcav@umd.edu).
