ACS:
Academic Computing Services
ACS provides technical support for the College
Academic
Computing Services (ACS) provides support for the use of technology
by faculty, staff, students, and units in the College of Arts
and Humanities. Its purpose is to encourage and support the
use of technology for scholarship and pedagogy as well as to
maintain an inventory of computer equipment in the College.
ACS's three main services are providing day-to-day technical
support, supporting faculty for scholarship and pedagogy, and
providing support for the use of technology in the classroom.
Among the wide range of services provided by ACS are: a help
desk that supplements the consulting services offered by the
Office of Information Technology; a Classroom Support office
that provides equipment and support services for the use of
technology in the classroom; network services such as file sharing,
application, and print services; training for faculty and staff;
advice on hardware and software selection; and the purchasing;
delivery, configuration, and maintenance of faculty and staff
workstations. The ACS staff also maintains open workstation
labs and specialized computer labs (for example, the Electronic
Media Center and the Language
Technology Classroom). ACS is managed by Kathy
Cavanaugh (kcav@umd.edu),
Director, Academic Computing.
CNT:
The Committee on New Technologies
CNT advises the Dean's office on strategy and policy
CNT
is a sub-committee of the Collegiate Council and an advisory body to the Dean's Office on IT strategy
and policy. CNT's core mission is solicit, develop, prioritize,
and recommend initiatives that best serve the IT needs of the
College, broadly conceived. The Committee periodically formulates
long-term IT development plans. CNT also recommends new policies
and policy revisions governing IT resources within the College
(such a instructional technology fund distribution and ACS services).
CNT is a faculty body that includes ex-officio members from ACS and MITH. Members are appointed by the Dean and serve two-year terms. IT proposals that call for College support normally are referred to CNT. The current chair of the CNT is Dr. Neil Fraistat (cnt-chair@umd.edu).
MITH:
The Maryland Center for Technology in the Humanities
With
collaboration at the heart of its vision, Maryland Institute for
Technology in the Humanities (MITH) at the University of Maryland
is a community of scholars, interdisciplinary institute, and electronic
space devoted to exploring ways in which new technologies can
be used in university research and teaching. Funded in part by
the National Endowment for Humanities Challenge Grants Program,
MITH is a joint venture supported by the College of Arts and Humanities,
the Libraries, and Office of Information Technology. Besides being
a virtual community and intellectual hub, MITH is an actual space
housed at the center of the University of Maryland campus in McKeldin
Library. Engaging undergraduates as well as graduate students
and faculty in research, MITH plays a pioneering role in developing
advanced technological resources for revitalizing, reinventing,
and expanding humanities research and education. Exploring the
profound effects of the new materialities presented by digital
culture, MITH serves college and pre-college faculty and students
with technical resources and a broad array of programs: summer
institutes for secondary, elementary, and postsecondary teachers;
resident fellowships for university faculty; networked associate
fellowships for faculty and graduate student projects from around
the world; colloquia; polyseminars; conferences (regional and
international); curriculum development; and dynamic mentoring.
Other
Resources
The
College also supports several open labs and dedicated facilities.
For a summary of these resources, please consult the "Resources"
