1. What do you want to do? Scenarios
Pedagogical Scenario 1:
Professor of History wants to use mulitple sources of historic footage from various VHS/8mm tapes and use present them in a class lecture
Source of content: VHS or 8mm
Technical Solution: User goes from 8mm/VHS camera or deck through digitizing card or sony box to capture utilitiy (such as Fusion) on computer. Professor will only need to crop clips so there is no need for editing software.
Output Recommendation: Movie file embedded in Powerpoint.
Pedagogical Scenario 2:
Professor of Dance, novice to DV, wants to shoot footage of a visting artist's masterclass and allow students to analyze their movement by reviewing tape
Source of content: miniDV tape
Technical Solution: Professor goes from miniDV tape or deck through firewire cable to iMovie (or MovieMaker) software on computer.
Output Recommendation: VHS tape
Pedgogical Scenario 3:
Professor of English wants students to tape themselves performing original monologues for a class website
Source of content: miniDV
Technical Solution: Professor goes from miniDV tape or deck through firewire cable to video editing software, iMovie or Movie Maker, on computer and exports to Quicktime movie.
Output Recommendation: Web
Pedagogical Scenario 4:
Professor of American Studies wants students to use primary source multimedia materials in class presentation
Source of Content: Library of Congress website
Technical Solution: Students downloads clips from Library of Congress website. If cropping is needed, professor can open clips with Movie Player or Quicktime to select and cut sections of the movies.
Output Recommendation: Web or Powerpoint presentationPedagogical Scenario 5:
Graduate Student of Comparative Literature is working on documentary file of Ecuadorian folk music.
Source of Content: 8mm footage shot in the field
Technical Solution: Student digitizes footage using Sony Box or digitizing card with Adobe Premiere. Student is going to need to do editing of audio tracks so she will capture and edit with Premiere which means greater learning curve but functionality needed as dictated by project.
Output Recommendation: VHS tape
