Cropping  Image
  • Click and Drag to box out desired area.
  • Use handle bars  and rotate options to adjust selection.
  • Hit return key to complete the crop.
Adjusting Overall Picture
Rotating Image Image Menu > Rotate Canvas
Sharpening Image Filter Menu > Sharpen > Sharpen
   or for more control 
Filter Menu > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask
Brightness and Contrast

Image Menu > Adjustments > Auto Levels or Auto Contrast

or for more control
Image Menu Adjustments > Levels ...
Select white eyedropper then click directly on image area what should be pure white.

Drag black and white triangles to redefine the black and white points.


Adjust Color Image Menu > Adjustments > Auto Color
or for more control
Image Menu > Adjustments > Color Balance
Image Menu > Adjustments > Hue Saturation
Adjusting Specific areas of image

Lighten area
Tool box- 
Dodge tool, select appropriate brush from the options bar.  

Darken area 
Tool box- 
Burn tool, select appropriate brush from the options bar.    

Increase color saturation 
Tool box- 
Sponge tool, select appropriate brush, set to saturate using options bar. 

 

Copy and Paste area of image to new file
  • Select area of image 
    Tool box: Marquee tool;
    Click & drag to select desired area 
  • Copy area to clip board 
    Edit Menu >  Copy (or apple + c) 
  • Create new file in which to paste image 
    File Menu > New ok  through default settings 
  • Paste Image
    Edit Menu > Paste (or apple/v)
 
Resizing Image for use on the Web

Resize image to fit in screen for main page or for use as a thumbnail 

Image Menu > Image size
Enter values in Pixel Dimension area 
Make sure constrain proportions is  checked. 

Average Inline images-
limit size of width and height to below  580x350 

640x480 screen resolution: 72dpi, 600 x 300 after menus 
832x624 screen resolution: 72dpi, 765 x 420 after menus
1024x768 screen resolution: 72dpi, 980 x 580 after menus

Thumbnails- ~150x150 works well 

Hires Images for detail:
just keep an eye on the file size; below 50k is recommended for web delivery 

Resizing Image for Use in Powerpoint

Image Menu > Image Size

Enter Value in Document Size Area.

Approximate width and height should be 10 x 8 inches. Resolution: 72 or 150 ppi .

Make sure Constrain Proportion and Resample Image are checked.

Saving Files

File Menu > Save
Format:
Save file in an uncompressed file format such as Photoshop, PICT or TIF for archival purposes or future editing. 

Save as JPEG for use in Powerpoint.

File Menu> Save for Web
JPEG
Save scanned images as JPEG format; 
don't resave JPEG files- deterioration from compression is cumulative. 

GIF
Save graphics in Gif format 
Adaptive Palette/ no dither/ experiment with numbers of colors
