Draw mask: black creates mask, white (or eraser) removes mask. One
strategy is to draw around inside edge of object with paint
brush then fill inside with paint bucket

Make figure current selection rather than background Select

Copy figure to the clipboard

Select desired destination image in which to paste figure
Edit Menu > Paste

Create new file with unique color as background and export as gif89

Resize image to fit in screen for main page or for use as a thumbnail

Enter values in Pixel Dimension area
Make sure constrain proportions is checked.
Average Inline images-
limit size of width and height to below 580x350
640x480 screen resolution: 72dpi,
600 x 300 after menus
832x624 screen resolution: 72dpi,
765 x 420 after menus
1024x768 screen resolution: 72dpi,
980 x 580 after menus
Thumbnails- ~150x150 works well
Hires Images for detail:
just keep an eye on the file size; below 50k is recommended for web
delivery

1. Image Menu > Mode > Indexed Color
Mode; Adaptive, no dithering
or enter desired number of colors
2. File Menu > Save for web...
Select GIF, no dithering, use 4-up view to experiment with various settings
and resulting image quality

Save file in Photoshop format for future editing.
Save scanned images as JPEG format;
don't resave JPEG files- deterioration from compression is cumulative.
Save graphics in Gif format

File Menu > Save > Format: Compuserve Gif
