Tool Description Pros Cons
Microsoft Word Word processing tool that allows you to save as web page. - Very simple process
- You might already be using it
- Available for free from MS license agreement on campus (call 5-2104)
- Available for Mac and PC
- it does not integrate images in a simple way so if you start doing more than just text you should probably integrate another tool into the process
Netscape Composer Web page creation/editing component of Netscape Navigator

- Simple to learn
- Simple to use
- Handles imbedded images well
- It is an integrated component to Netscape so if you are using version 4.x + you already have it
- It is a free download if you do not
- Available for Mac and PC

- It does not allow you to automatically do roll-overs, forms or other advanced html functions
Microsoft Front Page Web page creation/editing tool distributed as part of the Microsoft Office Suite for Windows

- Familiar Interface for Microsoft Users
- Free- Included in the Microsoft Office Professional Suite

 

- Available only on the PC
- Creates a lot of unnecessary coding that can cause inconsistencies in browsers (primarily Netscape)

Macromedia Dreamweaver Web site development tool

- It makes it easier to integrate advanced functions into your web pages such as roll-overs, image maps and forms.
- It has features that are helpful if you are maintaining a large number of pages
- It has features that are helpful if you have multiple people working on the same set of pages

- It requires a greater investment of time to learn.
- It is not free (available from Site Licensing though)

Microsoft Photodraw Image editing and graphics creation package

- Fairly easy to learn
- Lots of features to help you not only create graphics but HTML coding to go with it.
- Free (it is part of the Office suite so might already have it. If not, call 5-2104)

- Available only for Windows
Adobe Photoshop/Image ready Image editing and graphics creation package

- Very powerful; if you can think of it you can most likely do it in Photoshop
- Lots of features to help you not only create graphics but HTML coding to go with it
- Industry standard so there is a lot of help in learning and using it
- Available for both the Mac and PC

- Steep learning curve
- It is not free (available from Site Licensing though)
