Honors & Awards

Arts & Humanities Freshman Scholars

The Dean of the College of Arts & Humanities (ARHU) awards the Arts & Humanities Freshman Scholars distinction to students who earn a 4.0 cumulative grade point average during their freshman year. These students are honored each fall semester during the annual Dean’s Scholars Banquet.

Dean’s Freshman Scholarship

This competitive scholarship is available to academically talented students who apply to the University of Maryland for admission to one of the majors in ARHU by December 1. Undergraduate Admissions selects the scholarship recipients.

Dean’s Senior Scholars

ARHU departments nominate outstanding seniors majoring in their disciplines for the Dean’s Senior Scholars Award. The recipients of this prestigious award are honored each fall during the annual Dean’s Scholars Banquet.

Departmental Honors Programs

Most departments in ARHU have a Departmental Honors Program (DHP). DHPs are upper-division programs within the individual academic units. Students enrolled in Departmental Honors work independently with faculty members in subjects of special interest, develop and deepen their research skills, and, in the process, earn a stronger degree. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 to be admitted. For further information about individual Departmental Honors Programs and policies, consult with departmental advisors.

University Honors

ARHU students are eligible for University of Maryland awards in addition to college-specific awards. Examples of university-level honors include graduation honors and election to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. For more information about these honors, please visit the catalog.
