ARHU Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen

Students are considered for these scholarships on the basis of their application submissions to the university and their financial need. In addition to the many scholarships administered through the Office of Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the College of Arts and Humanities offers the following scholarships for incoming freshmen:
  • Arts & Humanities Dean’s Scholarships: A four year scholarship for students who display financial need and academic talent
  • Creative and Performing Arts Awards: Full in-state tuition scholarship for Art, Dance, Music and Theatre majors; awarded by audition and portfolio review
  • Dean’s Freshmen Scholars: A one year scholarship for academically talented, well-rounded students

ARHU Scholarships for Current Students

The college offers several scholarships to its students (details below).  Each scholarship has eligibility criteria. Scholarship information and applications are made available each spring semester. Applications are available in 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall. Scholarship deadlines are Friday, March 29, 2013, unless otherwise noted. Scholarship awards are granted for the following fall semester.  Scholarship amount is subject to change.

The Arundel Mills Scholarship
$500

The Arundel Mills Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit.  Students must be a declared Theatre, Music or Dance major in the College of Arts and Humanities with a GPA of 3.7 or higher.  Students must be full-time during the 2013-2014 academic year.  Application form can be mailed or delivered in person to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
 
 
For consideration of this award student must submit:
  • One letter of recommendation from a University of Maryland faculty member to be sent directly to the college. The letter must be sent from a university faculty member’s umd.edu email account to arhuscholarships@umd.edu or be sent on letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
  • Resume or list of activities and awards
  • A two-page double spaced essay.  Topic:  In the past few years the world has changed tremendously.  What do you think the role of the performing arts will be in the next ten years?  How do you see yourself contributing to the field?

The Catherine Vuozzo Scholarship
$1000

Annual scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student in the College of Arts and Humanities. Criteria for selection are based on academic merit with preference given to a student with financial need. Student must be full-time during the 2013-2014 academic year. Students on full scholarships are not eligible. Application form can be mailed or delivered in person to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
 

For consideration of the award students must submit:

  • An essay (2 pages double spaced) Topic: What does it mean to be an "educated" person? What is the role of the discipline in which you are majoring in forming educated people?
  • One letter of reference from a faculty member submitted directly to the College. The letter must be sent from a university faculty member’s umd.edu email account to arhuscholarships@umd.edu or be sent on letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
  • A brief statement explaining need for financial support

The Heyward G. Hill Memorial Scholarship
of the DACOR Bacon House Foundation
Full In-State tuition and fees
up to $5,000

This scholarship is contingent upon the funds that support it. Please check with the College in spring semester 2013 to see if the funds have been allocated. The scholarship will be awarded to a student that will have junior standing (at least 60 credit hours completed) by spring semester 2013, is a U.S. citizen and is interested in a career in international affairs. Minority students are encouraged to apply.   Application form can be mailed or delivered in person to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.  The deadline for applications is Friday, March 22, 2013.
 
 
For consideration of the award student must submit:
  • A letter outlining your academic interests and career plans
  • Transcript or (if transfer student) Transcripts
  • One letter of recommendation letter from a faculty member submitted directly to the College. The letter must be sent from a university faculty member’s umd.edu email account to arhuscholarships@umd.edu or be sent on letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.

The Stringer Foundation Performing Arts Scholarship
for Students majoring in Dance, Music or Theatre
$1,500

The Stringer Foundation Performing Arts Scholarships will be awarded to a student in Dance, Music or Theatre. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated financial need. Student must have a 3.3 GPA or above. Candidates must be full-time during the 2013-2014 academic year. Students on full scholarships are not eligible.   Application form can be mailed or delivered in person to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
 

For consideration of award students must submit:

  • A written statement to demonstrate financial need
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member to be sent directly to the College. The letter must be sent from a university faculty member’s umd.edu email account to arhuscholarships@umd.edu or be sent on letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
  • A two-page, double spaced essay discussing the importance of any of the performing arts as a part of a true liberal arts education.

Catherine P. Mackin Memorial Scholarship
For First-Year Arts & Humanities Majors

$2,000

The Catherine P. Mackin Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student who entered the University of Maryland as a declared major in Arts and Humanities in fall semester 2012, completed at least 12 credits in fall 2012, had a GPA of 3.5 or above for fall 2012, will be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credits in spring 2013, and demonstrates involvement on campus (such as work experience, participation in student groups at UM, etc.) Students on a full scholarship are not eligible. Application form can be mailed or delivered in person to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
 

For consideration of award students must submit:

  • A two-page double spaced essay
  • Topic:The transition from high school to college.
  • Describe your experiences as a new student to the University of Maryland. What academic challenges did you face? What factors contributed to your success? What advice would you give a new student to succeed academically?
  • One letter of recommendation from a University of Maryland faculty member to be sent directly to the College. The letter must be sent from a university faculty member’s umd.edu email account to arhuscholarships@umd.edu or be sent on letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.

The Douglas and Holly Jacobs Memorial Scholarship
$600

The Douglas and Holly Jacobs Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student who has transferred to the University of Maryland from a Community College and had earned a G.P.A of 3.3 or higher during the first semester at UM. The recipient must have entered the University of Maryland as a declared Arts and Humanities in fall semester 2012 and has a major in the College of Arts and Humanities for spring semester 2013. Annual awards will be based on need. Awards may be renewed for up to four academic years as long as the recipient continues to earn a 3.3 or better and is making steady progress towards graduation (at least 9 credits per semester). Since the scholarship is renewable, priority is given to the current recipient. Please check with the college in February 2013 to see if this scholarship is available.   Application form can be mailed or delivered in person to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.

Artist Scholarship
for students majoring in Music
$1,500

Student must be a declared Music major in the College of Arts and Humanities with a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Student must be full-time during the 2013/2014 academic year. Students on full scholarships are not eligible. Application form can be mailed or delivered in person to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
 
 
For consideration of the award student must submit:

  • A two-page double spaced essay Topic: Music programs are one of the first to be removed from a public school system. Why is it important to keep music education in public schools?

D.B. Hirsch Foreign Language Scholarship
$1,000

Students must have a foreign language major in the College of Arts and Humanities with a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Student must be full-time during the 2013/2014 academic year. Students on full scholarships are not eligible. Application form can be mailed or delivered in person to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
 
 
For consideration of the award student must submit:

  • A two-page double spaced essay Topic: Discuss why bilingual employees are an asset in a rapidly changing world.

D.B. Hirsch Scholarship
for students majoring in French, German or Japanese
$500

Student must have be a declared French, German or Japanese major in the College of Arts and Humanities with a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Student must be full-time during the 2013/2014 academic year. The James F. Harris Arts and Humanities Visionary Scholarship
$1425

In honor of Dr. James F. Harris, former Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, an endowed scholarship has been established in recognition of his visionary leadership. The James F. Harris Arts and Humanities Visionary Scholarship recognizes students with outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated interest and activities that exemplify key principles of an arts and humanities education. Students must have a major in the College of Arts and Humanities with a GPA of 3.6 or higher. Students must be full-time during the 2012/2013 academic year. Students on full scholarships are not eligible.  Application form can be mailed or delivered in person to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 29, 2013.

 
For consideration of the award student must submit:
  • One letter of recommendation from a University of Maryland faculty member. The letter must be sent from a university faculty member’s umd.edu email account to arhuscholarships@umd.edu or be sent on letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall.
  • A resume that includes a list of interests, activities and/or awards
  • A one-two paged double spaced essay

Scholarships are sometimes given on the departmental level. Please check with your departmental advisor or your director of undergraduate programs for more information regarding scholarship opportunities that may be available to you.

National Scholarships

The National Scholarship Office at the University of Maryland provides information on nationally competitive scholarships at the undergraduate (and graduate) level. Please visit their website for more information. Scholarship applications may be obtained in the OSA (1120 Francis Scott Key Hall). You may also submit applications online, using links for each scholarship. Your scholarship applications will not be reviewed unless all requested materials (essay, letter(s) of recommendations, etc.) are submitted.
