Benefits of Interning

  • Statistics show employers use internships to identify new talent.
  • Internships offer the opportunity to develop marketable skills and establish contacts that can potentially lead to a job offer upon graduation.
  • Ideally, internship experiences enable students to gain a sense of what it would be like to work in a particular field.
  • Internships provide students the opportunity to connect "real world" experience with classroom learning

Professional Goals and Expectations

When students embark on a professional internship they represent not only themselves, but the College of Arts and Humanities and the University of Maryland as well.  Some of the biggest complaints from internship sites concern dependability and punctuality.  Therefore, it is expected that all students applying for internships will arrive on time for their appointments with ARHU or will call if they are running late.  Failure to arrive on time for your scheduled appointment may result in the rejection of your application.

Internships in ARHU

There are several internship opportunities offered for ARHU students. Students interested in going on an internship should speak with their advisor.  Students will take one of the following courses while on their internship(s):

ARHU 286 Experiential Learning/Internship Course

Intent of ARHU 286

ARHU 286 is an internship course intended for students who wish to complete an internship in one of the academic fields covered within the College of Arts & Humanities.

Eligibility Requirements

Students must be majoring in a department in the College of Arts and Humanities, and have already earned 12 credits at the University of Maryland toward the completion of their degree before they are eligible to apply for ARHU 286. Students must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA on campus and fewer than 60 cumulative credits.

Credits and Grading

The course is offered for 3- through 6-credits, and is available for a letter grade or as Pass-Fail. This course cannot count toward your major requirements.

Students are expected to work 135 total hours for 3 credits, 180 total hours for 4 credits, 225 hours for 5 credits, and 270 total hours for 6 credits. Over the course of a full semester, it is expected that students will work 12-15 hours per week for a 3-credit internship and 20-25 hours per week for a 6-credit internship.  The total hours remain the same during a summer internship, although the hours per week will increase dramatically. ARHU 286 will not be available during winter term. In addition, there is an academic component that must be completed as outlined in the course syllabus (Spring 2013/Summer 2013/Fall 2013).

Finally, students can only earn credit for ARHU 286 during the semester in which they are registered for the course. Students cannot start their hours early, finish them late, or register for the course during one term and complete their hours during a different term. Students are responsible for submitting a time sheet documenting the hours they work by the Spring 2013/Summer 2013 posted deadlines.  Students will not be permitted to add ARHU 286 after the deadline for adding classes in any given semester. Additionally, no retroactive credit will be awarded for ARHU 286. There are no exceptions to these policies.

Application Process

Once you have secured an internship, you will need to complete the ARHU 286 Application Form (Summer 2013/Fall 2013), submit your completed application to the front counter in 1120 Key Hall or scan it into an email and send to arhuinternships@umd.edu.  You will be contacted to schedule an appointment with Dr. Nadler to review your application and eligibility.  Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., except for University-scheduled holidays.  Faxed applications will not be accepted.
