Art Exhibit: "Lia Halloran: The Same Sky Overarches Us All"

University of Maryland Art Gallery Thursday, September 5 - Friday, November 22, 2019 University of Maryland Art Gallery, 2202 Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building

"Lia Halloran: The Same Sky Overarches Us All" explores the lesser-known history of early women astronomers and the central role they played in modern astronomy, including the discovery and documentation of major celestial bodies. Using large-scale cyanotypes — a photographic printing process developed in the mid-nineteenth century, primarily for scientific use — Halloran examines how perception, time, and scale informs the human desire to understand the world and our emotional and psychological place within it. The exhibition also features her first immersive, three-channel video installation, "Double Horizon" (2019), an aerial exploration of the space above Los Angeles.

Halloran lives and works in Los Angeles. She is an associate professor of art and the director of the Painting and Drawing Department at Chapman University in Orange, California, where she teaches painting as well as courses that explore the intersection of art and science. The artist is represented by Luis De Jesus Los Angeles.

There will be a catalog available for purchase from the series "Your Body is a Space That Sees," produced by Lapis Press in Los Angeles, with written contributions by: Nina Renata Aron, Diane Ackerman, Dava Sobel, Rebecca Oppenheimer, Jennifer Oulette, Janna Levin, Maria Popova, and Anna Leahy.

"Lia Halloran: The Same Sky Overarches Us All" is curated by Taras W. Matla, associate director and acting director of the University of Maryland Art Gallery. This exhibition is made possible, in part, by a generous grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, Chapman University, and an Artworks Grant from the National Endowment of the Arts. Additional support is provided by the Dorothy and Nicholas Orem Exhibition Fund.

A reception and exhibition preview will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, from 5-7 p.m.

On view: September 5-November 22
