Movie at the Russian Embassy
Movie at the Russian Embassy
Soviet Russia's most famous female film director, Esfir Shub (1894-1959), constructed this silent masterpiece out of newsreel footage. A brilliant portrait of pre-revolutionary Russia, the lifestyle of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, the brutality of the First World War, and Lenin's political acumen, the film captured the tragedy of an empire spiraling towards destruction. Shub's extensive use of intertitles drives the narrative forward and makes it completely comprehensible for audiences.
