JAMES HARDING HONORED BY ASSOCATION FOR THEATRE IN HIGHER EDUCATION

James Harding

Associate Professor of Theatre Scholarship and Performance Studies James Harding, won the 2017 Outstanding Article Award from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) for his article "Incendiary Acts and Apocryphal Avant-Gardes: Thích Quảng Ðức, Self-Immolation, and Buddhist Spiritual Vanguardism" in PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art, 114 (2016). According to the ATHE,the Outstanding Article Award acknowledges "scholarship marked by methodological sophistication, complex and critical engagement with dramatic texts and performances, focused inquiries, and possible directions for future scholarship in a particular area." 

The essay, about the Buddhist "burning monk" Thích Quảng Đức, is the inspiration for his current book project, "Performing Beyond the Pale: Politics, Sacrifice, and Bodies in Extremis."
