Joyce Dudley (Class of 2015) is a Russian Language and Literature major who is spending the fall, 2013 semester interning in Bucharest, Romania with the U.S. Embassy. Working in the Information Resource Management section, Joyce explains that “. . .The experience is priceless. I am living and working in another country. I wake up just as all the other employees do and I come to work to contribute to the goal of success of the United States’ relations with another country. . . The importance I feel as an individual to be contributing to my country is indescribable.”

In addition to working with her section on Communications-related issues, Joyce has also been exposed to the roles of the Political section, the Economics section and the Consular section. She has had the opportunity to assist with several Human Resources events, helped host a reception at the Ambassador’s residence, and attended various luncheons and dinners with other diplomats and embassy officials. On the lighter side, for Halloween she gave a presentation to some local Romanian children about American desserts and candy, and then she went to a Halloween party at the Canadian Embassy. She values both the serious and not-so-serious parts of her internship: “Working in international affairs is an ongoing lesson, but history is always a great foundation.”

Needless to say, Joyce is making the most of every day in her internship, and knows that her foreign language skills are contributing to her future goals of being an Ambassador. As she stated in one of her reflection papers, “I have not been so at peace with life until now. I am beyond excited about this internship and just living in such a peaceful environment has been an awesome feeling.”
