Mahler's Symphony No. 5

Mahler's Symphony No. 5

The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Saturday, June 29, 2019 8:00 pm Dekelboum Concert Hall,

Michael Stern leads a triumphant conclusion to the 2019 festival with music by Anna Clyne, Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler. Clyne’s turbulent This Midnight Hour is based on poetry of Juan Ramón Jiménez and Charles Baudelaire and evokes a surreal nocturnal scene. Wagner’s ethereal Prelude to Act I from Lohengrin paints a shimmering vision of angels and the Holy Grail, and answers questions regarding the purity and sanctity of love.

Mahler’s towering fifth symphony is an emotional journey from its exposed beginning to its triumphant finale. Departing from his earlier symphonies, which are strongly intertwined with Mahler’s vocal art song, Symphony No. 5’s style is gripping and passionate while expressing the vulnerability and intimacy of mankind’s struggle to rise in the face of adversity.

Program:

Richard Wagner: Prelude to Act I from Lohengrin
Anna Clyne: This Midnight Hour
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 5

This is an EnCue-enabled event.

Arrive at 7PM for a Pre-Concert Conversation in NOI+F's SPARK! Lounge and stay after the performance to mix and mingle with NOI+F participants in the Lounge.

The National Orchestral Institute + Festival brings together aspiring orchestral musicians from across the country for a month of dynamic music-making and professional exploration. Chosen by a rigorous, cross-country audition process, these young artists present passionate and awe-inspiring performances of adventuresome repertoire at The Clarice and in the community.
