History Professor Receives President’S Commission On Ethnic Minority Issues Award

Professor Lisa Mar accepts 2013 Faculty Minority Achievement Award.

The College of Arts and Humanities would like to congratulate History Professor Lisa Mar on receiving the President’s Commission on Ethnic Minority Issues (PCEMI) 2013 Faculty Minority Achievement Award. The President’s Commission on Ethnic Minority Issues established Minority Achievement Awards to recognize faculty, staff, students and individual units that have made outstanding contributions to the University’s equity efforts. The awards also recognize those who have worked to improve racial climate on the College Park Campus by creating an educational and work environment that is rich in diversity, inclusive, and supportive of all students, faculty and staff.

“I believe that my experience is part of a larger aspect of our campus and college academic excellence,” Professor Mar said. “The ways that our exceptionally diverse community contributes towards cutting edge research and teaching helps make our campus a distinctive leader nationally, internationally, and regionally in Immigration Studies and in Asian American studies.”

Professor Mar is the campus’ first faculty member hired in Asian American Studies and is jointly appointed with a tenure home in History. Dr. Mar’s book about how illegal immigrants and disenfranchised minorities engage in mainstream politics, "Brokering Belonging: Chinese in Canada’s Exclusion Era, 1885-1945," won the Association for Asian American Studies History Book Award.

The President’s Commission on Ethnic Minority Issues awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 16 from 3-5 p.m. in the Maryland Room in Marie Mount Hall. Congratulations again to Professor Mar on this wonderful achievement!
