Program Description:

The National Endowment for the Humanities’ Summer Stipends program aims to stimulate new research in the humanities and its publication. The program works to accomplish this goal by:

  • Providing small awards to individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both
  • Supporting projects at any stage of development, but most especially early-stage research and late-stage writing in which small awards are most effective
  • Funding a wide range of individuals, including independent scholars, community college faculty, and non-teaching staff at universities

Expected program outputs include Archaeological Reports; Articles; Books; Digital Materials and Publications; Editions; Other Scholarly Resources; Translations.

Award Information:
Summer Stipends provide $6,000 in support for continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months.  NEH funds may support recipients’ compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research. Projects must start after May 1, 2023 and conclude by September 1, 2024. Summer Stipends normally support work carried out during the summer months, but arrangements can be made with the NEH for work to take place at other times of the year. NEH funds may support recipients’ compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research. Winners will receive notification by April 15, 2023.

Eligibility:
The NEH Summer Stipends program allows two tenured or tenure-track nominations per institution. Non-tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply without a campus nomination. The program is open to US citizens and foreign nationals living in the US for at least the past three years. If you apply to Summer Stipends and have applied to a fellowship program in the same fiscal year, acceptance of an award in one program will prompt NEH to automatically withdraw your application from the second program.

Campus Nomination Process:
Your application must include individual PDFs of the components listed in the NOFO. All documents should be single-spaced, at least 11-point font with one-inch margins. No budget is required. All materials submitted for consideration for a campus nomination must follow the NEH guidelines. Guidelines clearly indicate key information that must be included in each application component. Materials that do not conform to the published guidelines will not be considered.

Please note: Final applicants will be asked to provide NEH with the names, e-mails, and affiliation for two recommenders who will be contacted directly to submit letters of reference. This information is not required for initial, internal submission.

Applications must be submitted through VPR’s InfoReady Limited Submission portal by 5 p.m. on Monday, August 14, 2023. Campus nominees will be notified no later than Wednesday, September 6, 2023. The final submission deadline for campus nominees to Grants.gov is Wednesday, September 20, 2023.

Further information about the program and the submission process is available on the National Endowment for the Humanities site at https://www.neh.gov/grants/research/summer-stipends.
