Umd Offers Brand New Workshops In Fast Growing Field Of Translation And Interpreting

Fall 2011 will usher in three innovative workshops in translation and interpretation.

It’s been named one of the 50 best careers of 2011 by U.S. News and World Report and the U.S. Department of Labor says translators and interpreters will see rapid employment growth.

The Department of Communication, University of Maryland, has put together three new workshops for anyone interested in this cross-cultural profession.

These workshops cover three levels of experience in translation and interpreting. One will introduce participants to the fields of translation and interpreting. Another will prepare future students for academic certificate and degree programs. The third will complement programs of study at other institutions, and offer professional development opportunities for working professionals.

Translation and Interpreting workshops:Exploring the T/I Professions: New to the field? This workshop is for you!
Dates: September 7, 14, 21, 28, October 12, 19
Time: 6 – 9 p.m.
It’s ideal for individuals interested in exploring career options in translation and interpreting and for translators and interpreters seeking cross-training opportunities to develop new skill sets. T/I Skill-builders: Currently working in the field? This workshop is for you!
Dates: November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, December 6
Time: 6 – 9 p.m.
Ideal for individuals already working as translators or interpreters who wish to strengthen existing skill sets. Many participants work in language combinations for which there are few formal training opportunities in the United States or are international students and practitioners seeking short-term training opportunities in the United States. T/I Master Classes: Already an expert in the field? This workshop is for you!

December 3, 9 – 5 p.m.
December 4, 9 – 3 p.m.
Ideal for practitioners, students in other advanced T/I degree programs, and those seeking targeted training opportunities with distinguished professionals. Master classes may also consist of offerings for current or future T/I instructors in programs at other institutions.The workshops are taught by distinguished professionals with vast experience translating, interpreting, and teaching at international organizations, government agencies, and other academic institutions.
