ARHU Recipients

Stephanie Miracle, Department of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies

Stephanie Miracle has been awarded a 2014-15 Fulbright Grant for study in Germany. Stephanie, who will graduate this May, is the first UMD student to be awarded a Fulbright in the field of dance. Stephanie will study Tanztheater, a hybrid form of dance and theater which emerged in Germany during the late 1970s. Through intensive performance and choreography training with master teachers at the Folkwang Institute for Contemporary Dance (IZT) in Essen, Stephanie aims to enliven and enrich her own work as a performer, choreographer, and teaching artist. As a certified teacher of Klein Technique, Stephanie will also offer workshops at IZT and host round-table discussions on the intersections between German and American dance practices.

Upon her return Stephanie will continue working as a professional dancer, offer workshops, and present new choreographies at various producing venues in Washington, D.C. as well as national dance conferences. Through symposia and lecture-demonstrations, she intends to further the scholarly dialogue on the preservation and continuation of Tanztheater.
